When Homeschooling Teaches You: Faith, Discipleship, and a Pizza-Box Lesson
After homeschooling my kindergartener for five straight weeks, I’ve come to a humbling realization. Lol yeah I know only five weeks and I have something to say but hear out please
Homeschooling alone doesn’t guarantee that our children will walk with God.
It’s not just about how beautiful the curriculum is. It’s not just about how many Bible verses we memorize. It’s not just about how carefully we plan our days.
If the Word of God isn’t alive in us, lived out in the ordinary, messy, in-between moments of life, then our children may hear truth—but they may never see it. Our beautiful plans, curriculum, memory verses etc are not as effective.
Faith is caught just as much as it is taught.
Your Children Need to See God in Your Home
I’ve been learning that my children need more than my instruction— they need my example.
They need to see the power of God in:
the way I speak
the way I react
the way I handle stress
the way I treat others
the way I choose obedience over convenience
They need to hear real testimonies about what God has done in our home. They need to see repentance. They need to see courage. They need to see consistency.
Not perfection—just authentic devotion.
How Homeschooling Has Been Schooling Me
One unexpected blessing of homeschooling is how it forces you to look inward. As much as I’m teaching my children, I’m also discovering that God is teaching me.
Homeschooling has been:
sanctifying
stretching
refining
revealing
and honestly… life changing
It’s hard work. It’s a sacrifice. It’s a calling. And surprisingly—I love it. 😂
A Simple Trip for Pizza… and a Big Heart Check
Recently, I went to pick up a pizza. When we got there, Joel noticed a Halloween decoration on the door. Immediately, he said:
“Mommy, we have to preach to these people! They don’t know about God, and they need to know Halloween isn’t good.”
I walked inside… and simply collected my pizza. Quick in and out.
When I got back in the car, he asked:
“Did you preach to them?”
I said, “No… I didn’t have time.” Which was not true exactly. 😅
He wasn’t impressed. And in that moment, it hit me:
I had just missed a chance to model boldness and active evangelism.
If I want my children to be courageous about their faith, I must be courageous too.
If I want them to speak the truth in love, I must step into those moments myself.
I’m really didn’t want to talk to anyone about God that day but in the pizza shop I felt a nudge to, for my son’s sake. Maybe I would have had a wonderful testimony to share with him and I’m sure he would never have forgotten that. Well. lesson learned because the Holy Spirit really let me know that I had missed an opportunity to be an example my son.
Homeschooling Is More Than Education — It’s Discipleship
Yes, homeschooling covers math, reading, handwriting, phonics. But beyond all of that, homeschooling is:
daily discipleship
shaping the atmosphere of your home
learning to walk out your faith in front of little eyes
being intentional with moments that don’t look “spiritual” at all
And the reward? A home where Christ is not just mentioned… but seen.
I’m grateful. I’m humbled. I’m being stretched. And I’m being shaped right alongside my children.
