My toddler didn’t want to drink water after breastfeeding: Here’s what helped
When my toddler was eating more solids around 1 year ish, I faced a challenge that many parents can relate to – getting my toddler to drink water. It seemed like an impossible feat. My little one had developed an uncanny aversion to anything that wasn’t milk. Water was considered the enemy, and it was a daily struggle to ensure my toddler stayed properly hydrated.
The battle began with every meal. I would offer a sippy cup filled with water, and my toddler would resist vehemently. The mere sight of that clear liquid seemed to trigger a deep-seated resistance. It was as if water had personally offended my child.
Desperate to find a solution, I tried everything in my mommy toolkit, from colorful cups to playful straws. But nothing seemed to work. Frustration set in, and I realized that I needed a divine intervention.
One morning, after so many unsuccessful attempts to persuade my toddler to drink water, I turned to the one source of unwavering guidance – prayer. I whispered a heartfelt plea to God. I asked for His wisdom, His patience, and His grace to help me navigate this challenge. Nothing else had worked, so I put my faith in His hands.
The following day, as I pondered the situation, a thought sparked in my mind like a gentle whisper from above. I decided to embark on a daring experiment – a journey from 10% water and 90% milk to 100% pure, clear water. It was a challenge that seemed nearly impossible, but I was determined to make it work, driven by the inspiration I had received through prayer.
I started slowly, mixing a mere 10% water with 90% milk in my toddler’s sippy cup. It was a sly attempt to sneak in hydration without being too obvious. I figured this might ease the transition. At first, my toddler was suspicious. He took a sip, scrunched up his face, and gave me that “What’s this?” look. But he drank it, albeit with a hint of skepticism.
The next day, I increased the water percentage to 20%. It was a subtle change, almost unnoticeable. The taste was slightly different, but my clever little one didn’t seem to mind. He drank it without much fuss, and I couldn’t help but feel a glimmer of hope.
This pattern continued for several days. Slowly but surely, I increased the water content while decreasing the milk. It was a delicate dance, a transformation so gradual that my toddler hardly noticed the shift. And then, one magical day, it happened.
I prepared a sippy cup with 100% water, the final destination of our journey. I offered it to my toddler, fully expecting resistance. But to my amazement, he took a sip without hesitation. The look of surprise on his face was priceless. It was as if he had just discovered a new, refreshing world.
From that day forward, my toddler became a water enthusiast. The battles were replaced by joyful sipping, and I couldn’t have been happier. It was a triumph of patience, persistence, and the divine inspiration that came after I had prayed for help.
As I watched my little one happily drink his water, I realized that sometimes, the path to success is a gradual one, and with a touch of faith, even the most challenging hurdles can be overcome. And so, in our little home, we celebrated a victory that tasted just like pure, clear water – simple, refreshing, and oh so satisfying.
Take your little challenges to God and wait for His guidance. He truly cares. You got this Mama.
